| Title: Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s | Release Date: July 24, 2007 |
| Developer: Harmonix | Publisher: Red Octane |

Man, I love me some Guitar Hero, so when I discovered this little goodie at my local game shop, I was excited. That would be because I hadn't bothered to read any of the press on the game. I mean, why would I? It's Guitar Hero, right? The first 2 (and a half w/the Xbox360 version) were awesome squared, how could more Guitar Hero fail to add more awesomeness?
Well, let me tell ya.
First, lets talk about features vs. price:
6 Characters: $40
30 Tracks: $40
No new extras: $40
PS2 only, WTF?: $40
I could get by on the 6 characters, lack of extras and PS2 only, if the track list was somehow...good. I grew up in the 80s and I don't even recognize half of this crap. The other half I recognize, and half of that I kind of like. The tune situation is further exacerbated by the fact that there are no additional track to purchase. Or anything else of any value.
Instead of showing you the playlist by set, I'm going to show it by my own categorization:
Songs I don't know which therefore suck:
- "Because, It's Midnite" - Limozeen
- "Balls to the Wall" - Accept
- "Ballroom Blitz" - Krokus
- "Caught in a Mosh" - Anthrax
- "Bathroom Wall" - Faster Pussycat
Songs which I do know and hate:
- "Shakin'" - Eddie Money
- "Hold on Loosely" - .38 Special
- "Ain't Nothin' But a Good Time" - Poison
- "Lonely is the Night" - Billy Squier
- "The Warrior" - Scandal
- "Seventeen" - Winger
- "Play With Me" - Extreme
Songs I didn't know which turned out OK:
- "Los Angeles" - X
- "Wrathchild" - Iron Maiden
- "Electric Eye" - Judas Priest
- "Police Truck" - Dead Kennedys
- "Holy Diver" - Dio
Songs I knew which are kind of OK and hold some nostalgic value:
- "(Bang Your Head) Metal Health" - Quiet Riot
- "We Got the Beat" - The Go-Go's
- "Heat of the Moment" - Asia
- "Turning Japanese" - The Vapors
- "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister
- "What I Like About You" - The Romantics
And finally, songs I actually like (even if for purely nostalgic reasons):
- "I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls
- "18 and Life" - Skid Row
- "No One Like You" - Scorpions
- "Radar Love" - White Lion
- "Synchronicity II" - The Police
- "Only a Lad" - Oingo Boingo
- "Round and Round" - Ratt
A couple of things of note here: of 30 tracks, I actually really enjoyed playing 7. Eleven more were merely ok. The rest, I hated playing through. While everryone has different tastes, I expect that the breakdown will fall in similar numbers for most people. Some people will like the Judas Priest instead of the Go-Go's, and nobody is going to like Limozeen, but the end result for everyone is pretty much going to be a few awesome songs from the 80s and the rest is crap.
Where's the Duran Duran? The Devo? Robert Palmer? Culture Club? The Cure? The Fixx? Wang Chung? Blondie? The Motels? Men at Work? Men Without Hats? The Thompson Twins? Thomas Dolby?
Seriously. Limozeen? WTF Harmonix?
Unless you're a hardcore fan of GH and you actually like this track list: don't bother. Otherwise, like me, you'll play through it one time on medium and take it back the next day.
