The Darkness is a fantastic game. If you like shooters and you like awesome, then you'll like The Darkness. Unless you're like a WWII shooter only snob or something.

In The Darkness you play Jackie, a hitman for some New York city crime family. The game starts with a deal gone bad and a lot of unanswered questions. Oh, and lots of shooting. Eventually, the darkness shows itself and you get to freak everyone out and eat their hearts with snakey things that come out of your shoulders.

Heart eating is at the heart of a number of the Xbox360 achievements, in fact. You also get to command little henchman goblin things called darklings. They have various skills like blowing up, shooting and beating and they also spout one-liners about what they're going to do to their victims or, apparently, communism. Very strange. Very non-sequiter. And totally hilarious.

The game is dark, brutal, funny, occasionally (ok, like twice) heartwarming, and a pile of fun. The story is fantastic even if the ending is a little weak - but only when compared the rest of the story. The voice acting, particularly that of the darkness, is fantastic. Mike Patton (purveyor of evil clown music) was born for the part.

While the game is short-ish (I finished it in like 12 hours), it's all good. It is, in fact, one of the very few FPS games that I've played all the way to the end. And when the end came, I was sad. But not sad enough to play through it again. I have enough stuff to do.

If you like FPS even a little and you like awesomeness and aren't afraid of the dark, then you must go buy this game.
